I couldn’t really help but doing this parallels post now that Chapter 23 of Clear Card is out, it became apparent to me ever since I’ve seen the spoilers around….
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, chapitre 198
Syaoran just came back the second time in Clow Country, after being beat up badly by Fei Wang Reed and recovered at Yuuko’s place, and making a life changing decision. All because he wanted to see her again, and save her from her destiny. Sounds familiar? His hug is a hug of desperation and relief at the same time, because he thought he would never see again. Also, he can finally grab that hand, and it’s a reference to that terrible mistake he did the first time around.
Card Captor Sakura Clear Card, chapter 23
Yeah. The dynamic is basically the very same. I’m sure this parallel was intentional, on CLAMP’s side. Syaoran grabs her hand tightly, and with that he pulls her in a very tight embrace. Syaoran is scared for her safety and for her tremendous powers that are out of control, he’s been told time and time again that such strong powers bring misfortune upon its bearer. But Syaoran is not buying this. Not with his Sakura. He won’t let her fall into the same pit that swallowed some of her illustrious predecessors. Her happiness is his first and foremost priority, and we’ll see what he will do about that. This strongly resonates with the theme of episode 16 of the anime, just aired in Japan. Meiling is worried he’ll do something reckless to help Sakura, and honestly seeing him so desperate here (and being reminded of the Tsubasa parallel), it’s legit to think he’ll attempt something dangerous again.
Sakura, on the other side, makes a very soft and sad face. She is realizing he is hugging her out of desperation for something (just like in Tsubasa) and with the conversation they had before, she knows he’s worrying because of something that is going on with her. This is a moment full of tension and I can’t wait to see how it’ll go on next month.
