lol i love going into the comments section on any article about discovery and finding hundreds of hilariously wrong male trekkies…..this comment killed me because tbh I’d be hard-pressed to find two male characters in trek who had LESS “alpha male” elements than data and spock holy shit
…………………………………what is wrong with men
also I’m reblogging this again to say that spock/data are a character type that anyone with an ounce of sense would recognize? literally every trek has one? tos has spock and tng has data and also ds9 has odo and voyager has the doctor and then later seven and enterprise has t’pol
like it’s a very specific character role about an outsider learning how to exist in an alien environment while the crew learns how to accept the outsider. like it’s a central tennet of trek. how differences are not to be ignored because they’re important and special but there are also so many things we have in common
and in a world that is so constantly bent on conformity and order and suppressing differences, that is a really fucking important lesson
Also, um, Worf is not an Alpha Man. He will fight you, but he will also hide behind a pillar to avoid making small talk with you. He uses bat’leths in all of his decorating, but his ideal weekend involves hi-fi cast albums, love poetry, and a tea party. He fought the Dominion on a Klingon ship, but he talked about wedding planning half the fucking time.
But because he’s black, fandom tends to cast him as hypermasculine. Fake Geek Guys hold him up as an Alpha Man (while never actually caring about him as much as their white heroes), while my own homebase in white feminist fandom portrays him as being uniquely sexist.
